What went well as far as our internship project is that it turned out perfectly! Every aspect of it I am proud of. We originally had a different project idea that didn't go as planned, because just simply executing what we were being asked to do was so difficult. However after retaking everything over with Brigette we all had a much clearer idea of what needed to be done! I feel like we should've communicated with Brigette as soon as we got stuck instead of trying to find alternative solutions because at the end of the day this project is for the company. Another thing that went well though was the communication just between christian and i because we both knew what we had to do as far as roles go; he would write the script while I would find photos and media that would go with the video. I also edited the video while he voiced over the script. The biggest thing that stood out to me was simply just how well it sounded at the end because we used apple earbuds to record and we recorded it all in less than two hours!

If I could give future interns any advice, it would be to make sure you area familiar with Instagram, Facebook, and really social media in general. this shouldn't be a problem because kids are becoming more and more familiar with social media platforms but just make sure that you know how to use them. Also make sure that you have a laptop because you will be using your phone and laptop every day during internship. some of the most important skills that you will need to be successful at baby bird would just have to be listening because you will be doing projects that will go out to companies and if you mess up on your spelling or type the wrong information it affects how these companies view baby bird. Lastly the easiest way that you can develop these skills is simply just practicing following through with what you are going to say or do because it might sound small or cliche, but for future jobs you will want your employers to count on you and have your trust.
My internship has inspired me to go into computer engineering or something in computer science because I have really discovered that I have a talent for anything on the computer. I knew this prior to internship but this experience has stretched me to explore how comfortable I am on a computer. I haven't necessarily been looking at colleges because of this internship, however considering I have abetter grasp of what I want to major in I should be able to pick colleges based off of my major. I also have not really gotten any specific ideas as to what classes or courses I will take because I haven't gotten that technical into looking into certain colleges but I do have a better grasp of the area I want to study in!
I am most thankful for simply the opportunity that I was given to experience this whole thing. I am thankful for Christian who is my internship partner becuase we have helped each other out with a bunch of tasks and reminding each other about blog posts. I am very appreciative of my mentor who has been super cool and played back throughout this whole experience and he has helped me on projects that I am not sure on what exactly needs to be done. There are really just so many people that have stepped up and helped me when i needed it and I'm very happy I was surrounded by people with this work ethic. I think one new appreciation I gained throughout internship would have to be how grateful I am that our school allows breaks and we are allowed to move around during class becuase it gets a little restless sitting in a chair all day on your laptop.
I see amazing qualities in each and every coworker that works here. I see amazing photoshop and design skills that I would love to acquire before I go off to college because I know that you can make a steady living off of graphic design if you know what you're doing and you're successful. I also see hard determination from each and every one in he office that I already feel I have developed but you can never have too much determination so I would love to grow in that area as much a I can. I feel like my views beyond high school changed just s far as having a job and working in an office. This has been my first real work experience and it is an amazing experience that I will not take for granted. I feel like this has also curved my career path because now that I have done some graphic design and posters I really discovered that I do have a sense with space and design. I am considering majoring in graphic design and I am so glad that I was given this experience to work here. Above are my 5 selfies for this week. I have also attached my 3 photos for this week below!
I learned that you don't verbally need to communicate to be successful. As I have mentioned in previous blogs; we use Skype to communicate with each other in the office. We do have social interactions, but it isn't anything near how much social interaction we have at school. This isn't a bad thing it is just new for me. Going into this internship I really didn't think that communicating through Skype when we were less than 10 feet away from each other would be productive and actually work, however I have now taken back that judgement and I am getting used to asking questions over email or Skype. I know that there are jobs where you have little to no communication or no communication at all, but coming from a school where everything is project based and communication is key all of this was a new experience and as i said before I have began to adapt to this style of communication. Lastly I would like to add that throughout this whole experience I feel that I have grown and matured in a sense that I can't be messing around like I do at school and I feel that I have just grown as a person.
My internship project is actually coming along really well! it all started from just an idea and as time went on we started to shape and mold what is now our latest draft. Our project is a video that simply explains on how to grow your business using social media and how to use social media as a marketing platform. We originally were planning on doing an internship handbook video, where we would explain what to be prepared for if you are thinking about choosing this internship. However christian and I both were not 100% sure on what we were going to do, so after talking with the boss we decided to scrap the idea and that's when this idea came along. After talking with the boss we made a document and started to list out facts and main ideas we would discuss in the video. Once we had a pretty good grasp and understanding on how we wanted the video to look we started to make a script for the video. I found most of the facts and main ideas while christian wrote the script and then I would also at the same time find pictures that correspond with the script. Really, all we need to do now is do the voice-over and time the images so they correspond with what is being said! Lastly I have overalled learned about social media management and really just how it feels to have an actual job and I will take away real work experience.
Some of the differences between my internship and school would have to definetly have to be the project based learning, because we are not interacting with each other nearly as much as we do at school for internship. We use Skype to communicate because its quicker and quieter which is also very different because I'm so used to verbally asking questions at school. My time schedule is pretty leanent here as well as school except I feel like my work has more of a purpose here and my demand to finish the work is stronger at internship. I say this because at school typically if you don't finish an assignment in class its homework, but here it is different because there are specific deadlines that we need to meet if we want to keep and satisfy clients. I am not really sure how internship has and will influence me in the future as far as a careers go. This experience hasn't really affected my out view on careers which isn't a bad thing but it is just a learning experience. I can bring a lot from internship such as the rive to really complete my work on time and have more of a work ethic. I also feel like the work that I completed will help me in the future if I do decide to go into social media management because I know the "ins" and "outs" of hanging social media accounts and growth. Lastly I feel like I will take away the experience of having a job and certain responsibilities which will help me when I have my first job. Above are my four internship selfies for this week and below are my three photos for the week! I have attached my timesheet below where I have logged the hours I have completed during internship.
The biggest thing that I will take away from Internship that I will bring to school would have to be the work ethic and treating school like a job. What I mean by this, is that I will treat homework and school work like work assignments so if I don't complete those tasks it will be the same idea of not completing an assignment for work. It will help me get in the mindset of making sure I complete all of my work and it will help me especially during senior year and even in college. It isn't super easy for me to get motivated sometimes and I feel like if I am going to get a job and go to college then I should start finding motivators to help me get going in school and just in everyday life. Whether it be doing the dishes or studying for a midterm it is the same concept of getting motivated to do something you have been asked to do.
The biggest challenge that I face at internship would have to be the project that Christian and I are doing because we both are not 100% sure what we're doing. Our project was changed after we had planned it out so we started from scratch and we were given a goal to accomplish within the video, it is just hard getting the snowball rolling as far as how we will actually achieve that goal. We have asked our boss to clarify her needs and we will see where it goes from there. One of the problems that the company has encountered was the wifi going down our first week interning so we left after two hours of arriving, and we just hung out around balboa park and asked our internship teachers what we should do and everything worked out great, and the next day, the internet was fixed a little before noon.
I commented on Grayson, Angel T, and Chris Clark's blog posts and what I found interesting with Grayson is that he mentioned how there isn't much social interaction at his internship which I can actually relate too. We use skype to communicate with eachother even though we are only 10 feet away from eachother. I also find it crazy how much work Angel is doing on the farm as far as catching gophers and just lots of manual labor! The biggest question I have is for Angel, and that would be; How many gophers have you caught in total? I am seeing myself grow/ change over internship as a student but also as an employee. I say this because this is almost exactly like a paying job except we are being payed in hours, but we still have daily responsibilities and we have to be held accountable if we make mistakes. I am seeing myself change as a student becuase through working with christian we have to do tasks and work together which helps my communication skills that I can apply at school towards projects. I have also noticed that I am starting to interact more with my "co-workers" because I am starting to feel more comfortable around them, so that is also another area that I am proud to say I am getting used to. I have overall just grown as a person and I know that I will have a lot to take away from this whole experience. This is my fifth internship selfie with my co-intern Christian. I have also attached three photos that were taken throughout this whole week. The social interactions at Baby Bird Communications are actually very different then I had imagined considering that we are in an office all day with the door closed which isn't bad, but its different because at school we are so social. One of my favorite things that I found interesting is that we use Skype to communicate even though we are less then 10 feet away from each other. We use Skype because it is a quite and efficient way to communicate without having to disturb anyone else. Everyone is typically doing their own thing with the exception of our boss or coworkers asking us for help on tasks such as reading aloud prices or titles that they can type without looking down at the page. Everyone communicates through Skype and it isn't necessarily a quiet environment but it definitely isn't a loud environment like our school. Overall however the work environment is pretty chill and everyone gets along. To the left is my fourth internship selfie with Christian. For our internship project, Christian and I plan to make a video that shows what a normal day looks like at baby bird for interns. We will use screen capture and we will do a voiceover so there is talking along with imagery. Basically it is helping the sophomores and really any grade level below us who will eventually have an internship. This video will include how we log our hours, how we find our images, how we make spreadsheets, and a whole bunch of other things that we do daily and are just routine to us. The project will also benefit the organization becuase it will encourage other students to want and intern there and depending on how the company likes the video, they could possibly use it for marketing. Above is my third internship selfie for this week.
Who benefits from the work that you do at your internship? Who in the community benefits from the work? Overall, that happens at your internship site? How or why do people benefit from this work?
Well, the restaurants benefit becuase we are trying to populate and grow their social media accounts. The company has different clients and there are restaurant chains that are clients so Christian and I have been collecting competitor information that we will send to the restaurants so they can see how to improve or cut back on pecific aspects according to the results of our research. I have attached an image below that shows the spreadsheet that I created for Champps Sports Bar and Grill. At my internship site we were placed in an office where Christian and I work. To communicate with my mentor and anyone in the office we use skype which is a new concept that I hadn't really thought of. Basically we use skype becuase it is a quiet and easy way to communicate even though we are in seperate rooms and less than 10 feet away from eachother. touching up on who benefits and how they benefit, we are in other words, "scouts" I say this because we scout different sports bars within a few miles of each location for a specific restaurant chain that is a client and we just look at the ratings, the facebook likes, instagram followers, and any form of social media. I have pasted below my interview with Brigette O'Donovan who is the Creative Director at BBC. 1. What exactly is your job at Baby Bird? Describe it and tell us why you chose it. I am the agencies Creative Director. Creative Direction is championing the intersection where Art Direction & Design meet Strategy.I am the creative lead working with designers, artists, copywriters, sales teams and marketers to create a vision for products or services that our client sell. I plan advertising, oversee the creative process and give guidance to the creative people that work under me while ensure that the business goals of a project are met. For example, if we are selling batteries and we create an amazing marketing piece that goes viral but doesn't sell batteries or promote the brand, we have not succeeded. If we are selling batteries and we find a funnel that brings more eyes to a webpage that sells batteries and their sales go up, that is a win because we have met the clients business goal of raising percentage profit in their battery line. Another great example is the old spice commercial “The Man Your Man Could Smell Like”. This is how that campaign breakdown in an agency:
2. Is your job hard? What challenges do you face? What do you like about your job? Anything positive? In simple terms, yes, my job is difficult. I am creatively satisfied for what I’m doing. I mean I would say right now this is a very high point of my career, which is what I’ve wanted to do for so long. Owning and being the CD of BBC is a unique opportunity because the client themselves trusts me so much that there isn’t a lot of back and forth and approval process. That has to do with the relationship from years and years of work that has been successful and that’s transferred over to the creative side. As for challenges, I always want to be a part of everything. That’s just kind of how I am and it is unrealistic. In 5 years I probably will still be doing the same thing I’m doing now, but with bigger clients. More clients. More consumer-driven clients and I definitely like the sound of that. If you are a hard-worker and care about the creative that you are putting out, pretty much everything about the job is positive, other than not having enough hours in the day J 3. What is your major? What other things are you interested in that you've taken classes for? I finished school long ago. I had a marketing major with an English minor. I am very grateful for my education and I never stop learning. You have to have the fundamentals to even be invited to play in the game with large clients so, as for school, I would explore it all. For a short while, I wanted to be photojournalist. All in all, I have always wanted to be a storyteller. After my first week of internship, I am most suprised of how relaxed and layed back the whole office is. I was expecting more of a strict and formal setting, however everyone is so friendly and we all "share the air". I was also worried that I wouldn't fit in considering I'm a new intern who is younger than everyone else, but this was not the case at all. I was greeted by both Tanner (My mentor) and Bridgette (The manager) and everyone treats me as if I really work there. I am very excited and looking forward to sharing more of my expierience through this wild journey! I have attached an image of the office. Above is an image of the office along with my mentor and my co-intern.
As written on their website the Company's Mission statemnt is as follows, "Baby Bird Communications was born to create things that stand out. To create messages that people believe in. To reinvent new. We’re here to hold your brand in our hands and give it everything it needs to stay relevant and connect with consumers." I personally believe that they completely abide by this even though I have only been here for a week, the enviornment is so relaxed and just creative as far as the atmosphere. For example I was given the task to create a poster and I was told what to put on the poster and a logo and from there they said to do whatever I wanted. I will attach the poster below.
My mentor is a young man named Tanner Guisness, he has a brother who plays baseball for college and he is in charge of gathering media for restaurants and buisnesses so they can grow their business. He attended Oregon University and he majored in (Insert major) and he follows college sports. He is very accomplished male who is very proud of his job at Baby Bird Communications. Above is a photo with Tanner (my mentor), Christian (co-intern), and myself.
Welcome to my second Internship blog post for my 2017 internship! My hopes for internship is that grasp a better understanding of what it really is like to have a graphic designing proffesion. I also would like to gain more knowledge of graphic design that can help me outside of school on my own projects. This will also help me decipher whether I might think about taking graphic design on as a career. My dreams for internship would to be offered a job after I intern so I could get work expierience and make money on the side. Another one of my dreams is that I simply have fun and wish that this whole experiece will give me something amazing to take away. My fears are simply making mistakes that will upset my mentor or any coworkers. I also fear that I might not work at as fast of a pace as I am expected to considering I like to take my time.
Well, my site visit didnt go 100% as planned becuase I was actually given the wrong address to my internship so I drove out to Mission Valley only to find out that the company was located right next to Balboa Park. I was 15 minutes late however I communicated with my mentor and everything work out fine. The interview itself was less than a half hour and was pretty basic, however I didn't know that we had a certain list of questions that we were to ask our mentor. So my site visit didn't go exactly as I thought but it just adds to the whole internship expierience.
Some of the ideas that Christian (my internship partner) came up for the project was an internship handbook that basically just has tips and helpful ideas to make internship more fun and enjoyable to the student. I was also thinking of possibly creating a poster or pamphlet for internship that has all of the information and everything needed to get the gist of internship. However these are all just ideas and we haven't decided just yet what we will be doing as our final project. |
