We recently finished a project that was called October Sky. During this project we were given an objective and that was to build a rocket and we had a budget of 1,500,000. It might sound like a lot but the materials needed to build the rocket were very expensive ranging between 5,000 to 300,000 dollars. we chose groups and every member had a different job/task and those included budget director, project manager, and launch and design director. We launched our rockets three times and calculated the altitude and our goal was to reach 50 feet in altitude. After the launches each group was to present your rocket proposal to parents at an exhibition and try to convince the parents to invest in your rocket. the parents listened to all the proposals and voted on their favorite rocket and the top 5 rockets would launch. I learned a sturdy nose cone and fins will help your rocket launch and will keep it more stable in the air. I also learned that cotton balls alone will not keep your egg safe and it will crack immediately the rocket is launched. I fell the biggest thing that I learned was a group that communicates and cooperates effectively will result with success in the end. I liked that I was able to work with my friends and that I had fun with the project because last time I did this project it wasn't as enjoyable. Also I feel that it was a successful project due to the fact that we could pick our own groups. A lot of teachers choose groups and almost all kids don't like be assigned a group, and when you can choose a group it feels like you have way more freedom in that class. I didn't necessarily enjoy the exhibition only because of the voting situation where only 40 people could vote and then it would cost money to vote. I feel that only 40 votes out of 200 votes isn't very effective because people don't get their votes in. As well as the launching could have gone smoother considering none of the rocket really performed to their standards in my opinion. I think that I did a good job of keeping my group members on task. Although I feel that I was off topic at times I would recover by finishing my work when given a reminder. over all I feel that my performance as a group member met the expectations. I need to take into consideration how much money we spent because I think tat we could have spent a lot more money than we did on our rocket. I do feel that our rocket looked amazing but it could have looked even better if we had invested more money into our rocket.
